Monster High Cake

First time I ever work with chocolate ganache to cover a cake, I was kind afraid if was going to melt down with the high humidity and heat where I live... it turned out better than my own expectations.....

The cake was chocolate with a chocolate cream filling and white pink colored chocolate ganache for a sweet girl that loves chocolate. I heard she was thrilled!

Happy 237th Birthday America!

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Fourth of July is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

So why not make America a cake?

Father's Day Tire Cake

Made this gorgeous carrot cake for a special father and friend for Father's Day.

My client wanted a mechanic themed cake, her husband is the mechanic, ideas came to mind right away, that was the easy part, the hard part was to made them real... took me about a week to complete the car, tools, and the mechanic, the first doll i made was too fragile, i had to come up with a better structure, after watching some youtube videos i kinda figured it out... 


The hardest part of all was to find how to add the car to the cake without make the cake collapse, the car was made with rice krispies and fondant, at the end it got too heavy, that i needed to develop a way to add the mechanic underneath... lot of work but very challenging! I really enjoyed it!

Chocolate Marble Ganache Cake

Learned how to cover a cake with ganache, never did this before, I thought ganache was so hard to make, I was completely wrong!! Its easier than making buttercream actually!

Bought this Clean and Simple Cake Design class from craftsy.com and performed my best square cake possible, I remember the first square cake I did, it was awful! Looked like a blob...

Easter Rabbit was late....

....for a delicious easter carrot cake!




Bugs Bunny got late on Easter, he made this carrot cake a few days after Easter, he was busy hiding the eggs for all the kids in town, so he promised he will make me one after and he did.

It was such a gorgeous cake, delicious and creamy, he said his house smelled like carrot and cinnamon all over for hours. lucky rabbit!

Black Forest Cake

My dad's favorite cake, Schwarzwälder Kirschwasser.

The cake is named not directly after the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) mountain range in southwestern Germany but rather from the specialty liquor of that region, known as Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser) and distilled from tart cherries.

This is the ingredient, with its distinctive cherry pit flavor and alcoholic content, that gives the cake its flavor. Cherries, cream, and Kirschwasser were first combined in the form of a dessert in which cooked cherries were served with cream and Kirschwasser, while a cake combining cherries, biscuit and cream (but without Kirschwasser) probably originated in Germany.

Italian Spaghetti Cake

My local supermarket Publix has been hosting the Italian Month since February and finally I decided to create something i had in mind since a while ago, I saw a spaghetti cake in a Food Network magazine not like this one, I just improved it.

Its a chocolate cake carved into a bowl, covered with fondant and then painted with copper food paint.
then added some leftover decorations.

The rest is all marshmallow fondant, a fondant recipe from Edna de la Cruz, quite a work but the result and the taste is amazing.

Super Bowl Cake

Super Bowl is a big deal for football fans, specially this one, where two brothers were coaching two different teams.

Im owned by 4 parrots (3 Greencheek conures and 1 Quaker) which led me to make little black ravens with fondant. I tried to win by telling them I was going for the 49ers but no luck. :)

Happy Birthday Batman Fan

Last month I traveled to South Lyon, MI, to surprise my nephew on his 6th birthday.

To surprise him even more I made him a Batman cake from scratch, no cake decorating tools, no cutters, just one sharp knife and a very open imagination.

Made a Mashmallow Fondant from scratch and thanks to the dry and cold weather up there it came out perfect, unlike here in Florida which is hot and humid where it falls apart sometimes... Cake was made with chocolate with chocolate cream filling.

Pretty amazing experience where you have to figure it out how to work without your tools. I was very happy with my outcome.

Topsy Turvy Cake

On this project I learned how to carve a cake to make it look like topsy turvy shape, the topsy turvy pans are expensive, unless you can afford them, they are nice and make the cake even better shaped.

Its a fall theme chocolate cake, carved, covered with fondant and decorated with gum paste leaves and flowers.

Halloween Pumpkin Carved Cake

This is the cake when it got home from class I saved it for 2 weeks to decorate it with leaves and fall dried fruits, took me a while to finish it.

Pink Rose Cake

Made this beautiful cake with fondant and gumpaste,
its a red velvet with cream cheese filling.

Rose was 5 inches wide, made by hand (no cutters), and handpainted.

Briar Rose Box Cake

Its a 6 x 2 cake for practice as my last class project.

Pearl necklace was made 4 days in advance, along with the roses.

Border and cover is made of fondant, dusted with a bit of pearl white dust. then steamed to get shine.

Colorful Buttercream 3-Tier Cake

Finally learned how to stack a cake with more than 2 tiers, it was quite a work, the project class was only 3 hours so I needed a practical design that does not take more than 3 hours to finish.

So I thought of decorating the cake with buttercream, a lot of buttecream, I bought two 5 lbs buckets of buttercream and mixed each color separate, took me a while...

First I had an idea to do a wedding cake but I was short of time for ideas.
This cake was delicious, top tier was chocolate, middle tier was orange and bottom tier was coconut.

Teal n Purple 2-Tier Cake

My very first 2 tier cake I did for a friend, it was kinda scary but fun to stack the top part, scary because I did not know how it was going to come out, I was not on that cake decorating level yet, I just was barely learning it.

I got enough info and intructions from my teacher, and it turned out fun!
Cake was a vanilla/pistacho cream with regular fondant and royal icing flowers.

Everyone loved the cake and my friend was so happy!

Hi there!  Welcome to Sugar Mist Creations, my new cake decorating blog.

My name is Maria, some call me Mari or Maricel and I am a hardworking and talented individual with a creative background in art, loved to paint as a child, and holding an Associate in Science in Graphic Design, worked as a graphic designer for many years, I decided to step away a bit from the computer to expand my creativity decorating cakes.

I enjoy learning about baking, experimenting different recipes, different frostings, researching baking products online or by others, Decorating a cake can be very rewarding when people say Wow! How did you do that?

I hope you enjoy my blog and the cake pictures, I am not much of a writer so you might find my posts short, I will try to get better at it, will do my best!
